Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Limited is the parent company which oversees Healthcare of New Zealand Limited and Freedom Alarms (a joint venture company with Wellington free Ambulance).The holding company’s board comprises the two founding Directors, Doug Catley now Chairman and Peter Cottier as Director, with former union leader Ken Douglas also in the role of Director and the organisation’s Managing Director, Peter Hausmann.

Healthcare of New Zealand Limited is where head office functions are based such as finance, quality, human resources and communications.  The company has a number of divisions under which its specialist services are operated.  Each division has its own unique brand.  The Healthcare of New Zealand Limited board comprises of Chairman Ken Douglas, Managing Director Peter Hausmann and two Directors, general practitioner and health sector advisor John Wellingham and former Minister of Health Wyatt Creech.

Doug Catley
Chairman, Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Limited

Doug is one of the founding Directors of Healthcare of New Zealand and has a wealth of experience in the health sector. He has been Deputy Chairman of the Wellington Area Health Board and Chairman of its Policy and Finance Committee, a Member of Council for the University of Otago Wellington School Medicine and a Member of the Medical Research Foundation. He was also Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustbank.

Doug has a real passion for sport and is currently Vice President of Wellington Cricket, Chairman for Karori Cricket Foundation, Chairman of the Basin Reserve Trust Board and is in the last year of a two year term as President of Old Boys/University Rugby, a term that commenced in 1997!

Peter Cottier
Director, Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Limited

Peter is also a founding Director of Healthcare of New Zealand Limited and was Managing Director from the organisation’s inception in 1988 until his retirement in 1998.

Peter was Chief Executive of Duty Calls Nursing and Homecare Limited, Healthcare Consulting Group Limited and Aged Care Hospitals Limited. Prior to his involvement in Healthcare of New Zealand, Peter established and operated a family business and has been a Company Director for over 30 years. He is a member of the Institute of Directors of New Zealand Inc.

Peter has been actively involved in a number of community organisations at Board of Directors level and is a long standing active member of the Rotary Club of Wellington.

A keen interest in wine encouraged Peter and his family to establish a vineyard in the Wairarapa. In addition to the vineyard, Peter participates as a shareholder/director in a number of other interests, in New Zealand and offshore. He and his wife Yvonne have one daughter and four sons.

Ken Douglas, ONZ

Chairman, Healthcare of New Zealand Limited

Ken Douglas is widely recognised as a life-long trade unionist in New Zealand, leading the union movement in New Zealand for over twenty years.  He notably served as the national secretary and treasurer of the New Zealand Federation of Labour (1979 – 1987), and as the inaugural president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions until 1999.

During this period he was New Zealand representative on the World Union Movement Executive; president of the Asia/Pacific Regional Trade Union and a worker’s representative on the governing body of the International Labour Organisation. Ken’s ongoing dedication to the improvement of working conditions has made a significant contribution both locally and abroad.

Ken’s valuable insight and experience has led to his appointment to a number of advisory roles both locally and internationally. He was an official advisor to the New Zealand Government delegation at the World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference in Singapore (1996) and Seattle (1999).  His board memberships have included New Zealand Post (Deputy Chair), Capital and Coast District Health Board, (Deputy Chair), Air New Zealand and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. He is currently the Chairman of the Michael Campbell Foundation, the Deputy Chairman of the Asia-NZ Foundation and sits on the Board of New Zealand Rugby Union. He has also been an elected councillor of the Porirua City Council since 1998.

He has been awarded the Order of New Zealand, New Zealand’s highest honour, membership of which is limited to only twenty living persons at any time. In 1999, he was also recognised as an honorary Doctor of Law by Victoria University in Wellington.

Ken lives in Wellington.  His interests are political history, political economy and his eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Peter Hausmann
Managing Director

After graduating from Massey University in 1982, Peter spent several years working in sales and management roles in the Information Technology sector before moving to Unisys in 1992. Here he held a number of positions including Director of Marketing for Unisys New Zealand, General Manager of the Government Sector Integration Team and Director Telecommunications.

Appointed Managing Director in 1998, Peter was given the objective of leading the organisation through a heavy transition phase; from an organisation focused on home care and aged care hospitals to one with the capabilities to provide a full community health and disability service - an objective he met in full.

Peter is a director and shareholder of Healthcare of New Zealand, Chairman of the Board of Freedom Medical Alarm Limited and is a former-member of the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board.

A self-confessed family man, Peter is married with three children. He is also an avid sportsman and when time permits, enjoys a wide range of sporting activities including skiing, diving, fishing and cycling.

John Wellingham
Director, Healthcare of New Zealand Limited

John is a general practitioner (GP) and health sector advisor who is recognised in the industry for his work to improve the quality and coordination of patient services.

He is one of 11-partners in a large multidisciplinary health centre in North Shore City, and also works part-time at clinics servicing Maori and low-income earners.  He has led the development of quality assurance and quality improvement processes in general practice.  He currently chairs the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners’ Board of Quality.  This has resulted in the development of the Cornerstone process for accreditation of general practices in New Zealand, a programme which has recently been provided with government funding to accredit every NA general practice.

His previous roles have included, the development and implementation of chronic care programmes with a focus on improving the delivery of services to people with higher than average clinical risks such as Maori, Pacific people and people in low socio economic situations .

Born in England, John came to New Zealand in 1980. He is married with two adult daughters. His recreational activities including sailing and jogging.

Wyatt Creech, CNZM
Director, Healthcare of New Zealand Limited

Former Deputy Prime Minister (1998 – 1999) for the National Government, Wyatt was a cabinet minister for nine years and held a wide range of portfolios including Health, Education, Employment, Revenue and Deputy Finance. As the Minister for Senior Citizens, Wyatt chaired the Multi-Party Group that succeeded in negotiating the Superannuation Accord between National, Labour and the Alliance.

Wyatt was born in California, USA. His father was a US Marine in New Zealand. His mother was a nurse from Masterton. The family immigrated to New Zealand when he was young and he grew up in the Wairarapa where his father purchased a farm in 1953 He studied at Massey University and gained a Diploma in Sheep Farming and later a BA in Political Science and International Politics from Victoria University of Wellington. Subsequently he studied accountancy and worked in an accounting firm in Masterton.

Prior to entering Parliament, he led the development of Palliser Estate Wines (Martinborough) which is now a well-known and successful medal-winning wine producer. After leaving Parliament in 2002, he re-entered the commercial world, playing a key role in the development of a new independent commodity producing dairy company, Open Country, followed by leading the establishment of a specialty cheese offshoot company, Kaimai Cheese, at Matamata. Wyatt continued to maintain an interest in politics through a  role on the National Party board until mid 2009. He remains a Privy Councillor (title: Rt Hon). He has also been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Wyatt now lives in Wellington. He and his wife Danny have three sons.
