Mental Health Support

Success story

Supporting Tamati

Background

Tamati had a dual diagnosis of paranoid personality disorder and alcohol dependency. He also had a number of physical and medical issues, and a history of being admitted to hospital after neglecting to take his medication.

We established an early meeting with Tamati to discuss his needs and to determine the level of support he required. We were able to begin supporting him within a week of receiving his referral.

Introducing support

One of our registered nurses began visiting Tamati every morning to assist him with medication compliance. We also supported him to complete his activities of daily living and to develop strategies for keeping his appointments.

Key barriers

1. Tamati’s alcoholism was impacting upon his mental state and behaviour and he was initially unwilling to engage in activities that were not related to alcohol.

2. Tamati believed that he was being forced to take his medication.

3. He had difficulty remembering his appointments.

Tamati’s support outcomes

• Tamati has maintained his wellness and been able to keep living in the community.

• He has not been admitted to hospital since he began receiving our support.

• Tamati is following our tips for remembering appointments and his attendance has significantly improved, which has enabled greater wellness.
