Our executive board members have each made considerable contributions within their respective fields. Together, they ensure that we are governed effectively so that we can continue to provide the highest-quality health and disability support possible.
Ken Douglas, ONZ
Director, Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Ltd (HHL)
Chairman, HHL Group
Ken led the New Zealand union movement from 1979 to 1999, first as the Federation of Labour secretary, then as the inaugural president of the Council of Trade Unions.
Internationally, he was president of the Asia/Pacific Regional Trade Union and a representative on the World Union Movement Executive (ICFTU) and the governing body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
His board memberships have included deputy chair of New Zealand Post, Capital and Coast District Health Board, NZ Trade and Enterprice, and the New Zealand Rugby Union Board.
Ken is chairman of the Michael Campbell Foundation, deputy chairman of the Asia-NZ Foundation. He is also an elected Porirua City Councillor, and in 1998 he was awarded the Order of New Zealand – our highest honour.
Ken was also awarded a Hon. Doctorate of Laws from Victoria University of Wellington in 1999 and is a Justice of the Peace.
Peter Hausmann

Chief Executive Officer, HHL Group
Peter was appointed as Healthcare’s managing director in 1998, and he has led the organisation through a period of significant growth and development.
Under his direction, Healthcare has transitioned from an organisation focused on home care and aged hospitals to Aotearoa’s largest provider of community-based health and disability services.
Peter graduated from Massey University in 1982 and subsequently spent several years working in senior sales, marketing and management positions within the information technology sector.
Wyatt Creech, CNZM
Deputy Chair
Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Ltd
Former Deputy Prime Minister (1998–1999) for the National Government, Wyatt was a cabinet minister for 9 years and held a wide range of portfolios including Health, Education, Employment, Revenue and Deputy Finance.
His commercial experience includes working as an accountant, leading the development of the award-winning Palliser Estate wines, playing a key role in the development of a new independent commodity-producing dairy company Open Country and leading the establishment of a specialty cheese offshoot company, Kaimai Cheese.
Wyatt maintained a role on the National Party board until mid-2009. He remains a Privy Councillor (title: Rt Hon) and has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Doug Catley
Director
Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Ltd
Doug is a founding director of Healthcare of New Zealand, and he established the organisation in 1988 because he recognised the growing need for high-quality community-based health services.
With more than 28 years’ experience in the health sector, Doug has held a range of public and private positions. He was deputy chairman of the Wellington Area Health Board and a member of the council for the University of Otago Wellington School of Medicine.
He is a member of the Medical Research Foundation and was also deputy chairman of the board of Trustbank – a government appointed role.
Doug has a real passion for sport and is chairman of the Basin Reserve Trust. He was chairman of the Karori Cricket Foundation for more than 20 years.
Peter Cottier
Director
Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Ltd
Peter is a founding director of Healthcare of New Zealand, and was managing director from the organisation’s inception in 1988 until his retirement in 1998.
Peter was chief executive of Duty Calls Nursing and Homecare Limited, Healthcare Consulting Group Limited and Aged Care Hospitals Limited. Prior to his involvement in Healthcare of New Zealand, Peter established and operated a family business and has been a company director for over 30 years. He is a member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand Inc.
Peter has been actively involved in a number of community organisations at board of directors level and is a long standing active member of the Rotary Club of Wellington.
A keen interest in wine encouraged Peter and his family to establish a vineyard in the Wairarapa. In addition to the vineyard, Peter participates as a shareholder/director in a number of other interests, both in New Zealand and offshore. He is married with a family of one daughter and four sons.
John Wellingham

John is an Auckland-based general practitioner (GP) and health sector advisor.
He is well recognised within the health industry for his work to improve the quality and effectiveness of patient services, and is currently a partner wihin a large, multidisciplinary health centre in North Shore City.
John is committed to the onging development of quality assurance and quality improvement processes in general practice and primary health care.
John is currently Director/Partner of the Apollo Medical Centre Boards (Primary Medical Health Ltd, Apollo Health Limited and Primary Holdings Limited). He is a a member of the Health Quality and Safety Commission Expert Advisory Group for the development of Healthcare Indicators for the sector.
Sir Harawira (Wira) Gardiner KNZM
Director
Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Ltd
Wira was a founding director of the Waitangi Tribunal and founding chief executive of Te Puni Kökiri.
In 2008, Wira was awarded the Distinguished Companion of the Order of New Zealand for his services to Máori.
Wira has had a distinguished career serving New Zealand. He retired from the army in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years of service, including a year of active service in South Vietnam.
He has also worked extensively in both the public and private sectors, holds many directorships and was recently chairman of the Tertiary Education Commission. Sir Wira chairs the board of Te Papa and recently stood down as the founding chair of the National Máori Health Coalition.
Michael Copeland
Director
Healthcare of New Zealand Holdings Ltd
Michael has a strong background in economic consultancy and was a joint founder and managing director of Brown Copeland and Company Ltd.
This firm has undertaken a wide variety of projects for public and private sector clients, both in New Zealand and internationally.
His work overseas has principally been for the Asian Development Bank and involves the cost-benefit analysis of investment projects.
Michael was a member of the New Zealand Commerce Commission for 4 years from 1990 until 1994.
He was also a lay member of the High Court of New Zealand from 2002 until 2008.
Michael’s directorships include the Wellington Rugby Football Union and Southern Pastures LP.
