Our history
Healthcare of New Zealand was founded in 1988 by Doug Catley and Peter Cottier, as they wanted to create high-quality community support services within the Wellington region.
The organisation began with a small hospital, called Johnswood, in Upper Hutt that provided continuing care for older people.
Encouraged by the community’s positive response, Healthcare took on another three hospitals within the region and gained a wealth of aged-care experience.
In the early 1990s, the organisation recognised that an increasing number of people wanted to be supported in their own homes, rather than in hospitals or institutions.
Duty Calls nursing bureau was purchased soon after and the organisation’s presence in the home and community support sector was cemented.
As expertise grew, Healthcare extended the range of its support, establishing its first disability services in 1995. Ten years later, NZCare played a key role in supporting people with disabilities to move out of institutions and into more empowering lives within the community.
Healthcare continued to grow at a rapid pace and today it provides a diverse range of services that strengthen and complement its core business of home-based health and disability support.
These services include specialist nursing, long-term condition management, mental health and addiction support, specialist disability services, workforce training and education, high-quality medical alarms and telehealth technology.
The organisation continues to evolve today, seeking innovative new ways to support New Zealand’s health system and to enhance people’s wellbeing and quality of life.
