NZCare: Huntington's support

If you or someone you love has Huntington’s disease, we can support you to live as independent a life as possible and to maintain your dignity and respect.

Our professional team will support you and your family/whānau each step of the way, enabling you to enjoy the present, to plan for the future and to overcome any challenges that may arise.

To find out more about the range of support that we can offer you, please see the specialist service information listed below.

Supported living options

To ensure that you can make choices about where you live and have access to the high-quality support you need, we can provide you with a wide range of specialist living options.

This may initially involve supporting you in your own home, and then depending on your wishes and needs, we can support you to move into one of our residential services.

In Wellington, for example, we provide specialist long-term support to people with advanced Huntington’s through our purpose-built residence Amaryllis House.

This service, which opened in 2004, is designed to function as a home to ensure that you can live as normally as possible while having access to experienced staff and to any high-quality specialist support you need.

Amaryllis House is the only service of its kind in New Zealand, and we are committed to opening a similar facility in Christchurch in the near future.

Flexible respite options

With our short-term respite services, we can support you to take an enjoyable, safe and supported break away from your usual home environment or support system.

Our professional team will work with you and your family/whānau and advocates to create a personalised respite support plan that meets your individual wishes and goals.

This may include supporting you to do the activities you enjoy, to be part of a family holiday, to enjoy some out-of-family respite time or to strengthen your skills and relationships.

Whatever your respite needs, we will enable both you and your support network to live with more independence and to maintain greater energy, life balance and wellbeing.

Individualised funding

As a Ministry of Health-approved individualised funding (IF) host, we can support you to take maximum control over the support services you or your family member receives.

Our specialist IF advisors will provide you with the information, knowledge and guidance you need to effectively manage all aspects of your service delivery, including:

  • creating a carefully tailored support plan
  • choosing your ideal support provider/s
  • employing and paying your staff.

To find out more about our IF services, please call: 0800 467 843 or email ifhost@healthcarenz.co.nz

We provide all members of our team with on-going training and will regularly seek feedback from you and your family/whānau to ensure that we can meet your changing wishes and needs.

You may also choose to join one of our client and family advocacy groups so that you can play an active role in the development of our services.
