Qualifications overview

 Our NZQA-accredited private training establishment Wellcare Education supports learners through a career pathway, from entry-level foundation skills to specialist level 4 courses.

Wellcare's experienced tutors will tailor their training to suit each workforce's development goals, enabling teams to gain the following specialist skills and nationally recognised qualifications.


Short and specialised courses 
  •  Person-centred dementia
  • Moving and handling
  • Medication management
  • Assessor and verifier training 

National Certificates in Health, Disability and Aged Support
  • Level 2: Foundation Skills (see below)
  • Level 3: Core Competencies (see below) 

National Certificate in Community Support Services
  • Level 3 Residential, Intellectual Disability and Human Service


Through extensive consultation, we have developed a detailed range of course competencies that meet sector and NZQA requirements and ensure that each trainee can develop the skills they need.

Learners who achieve the Foundation Skills qualification will be able to:

  • describe support worker roles and responsibilities
  • support a client’s wellbeing and quality of life
  • handle equipment and people safely
  • describe health and safety requirements
  • provide inclusive, empowering support for people with disabilities
  • describe the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights.

 Learners who achieve the Core Competencies qualification will be able to:

  • apply clients’ rights in the workplace
  • maintain a safe and secure environment
  • support a self-advocacy process
  • transfer and position people safely
  • support someone whose behaviour may present a challenge
  • support people to meet their personal care needs
  • support a person to take prescribed medication
  • support behaviour that maximises independence
  • describe ethical support worker behaviour and culturally safe operating principles.
