Stay connected.
Stay safe.

In response to COVID-19, we’re offering immediate expert advice and support to anyone who is eligible for disability support services or anyone who cares for or supports someone who is eligible for this service.

If you are currently receiving disability support you will be registered with a Needs Assessment Service Coordination (NASC) service (https://www.nznasca.co.nz/regions).

At Explore we work within a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework and support and train others in this model. The overall aim of PBS is to improve the quality of a person’s life and that of the people around them. PBS provides the right support for a person, their family and friends to help people lead a meaningful life and learn new skills without unnecessary restrictions. It is not simply about getting rid of problematic behaviour.

We take a holistic approach to understanding a person and their situation, consistent with Te Whare Tapa Wha and ensure safe cultural practises that are in line with our values of respect, empowerment and excellence.

Are you?

In response to COVID-19 we are offering immediate expert advice and support to parents of children who are eligible for disability support services. We will:

  • Ensure you a safe and supportive place to talk;
  • Validate your experiences during this time;
  • Be responsive and take time to understand your needs;
  • Assess and support your overall psychological health and wellbeing;
  • Support your resilience and avoid burnout;
  • Promote the wellbeing of your immediate support network and whānau.

You and your child may be finding things particularly difficult under the conditions of social distancing and community lockdown that have been put in place to manage COVID-19. We can also arrange follow up sessions with an Explore specialist. This specialist will work together with you to understand the patterns in any challenging behaviours or anxiety your child is experiencing. Examples of challenging behaviours at this time may include:

  • Problems with understanding changes in everyday routines, affecting sleeping, eating, play, and positive interactions with others;
  • Engaging in risky or self-harm behaviours;
  • Having angry outbursts that may include verbal or physical aggression towards others.

In response to COVID-19 we are offering immediate expert advice and support to people working in residential care supporting people who are eligible for Disability Support Services. You may be a support worker, team leader or service manager of an adult or child with autism/disability – we can provide immediate telephone support for you, and your wider team. We will:

  • Give you a safe and supportive place to talk;
  • Validate your experiences during this time;
  • Be responsive and take time to understand your needs;
  • Assess and support your overall psychological health and wellbeing;
  • Support your resilience and try to avoid burnout;
  • Acknowledge the uncertainty and anxiety you may be facing;

Explore has local teams to provide behaviour support and advice for every residential provider in New Zealand supporting people who are eligible for Disability Support Services.

If you are have previously made a request for support through your local NASC and are on our waitlist for our services we will be contacting you. If you support someone who has previously been supported by Explore or or if you are concerned about someone new to Explore, we can arrange a time with you to discuss this person’s needs.

Under COVID-19, we can arrange to work with you remotely and we will want to focus on any safety concerns you may have. We will take some time so that we can understand the patterns in behaviour of those under your care, and so that we can provide individualised support to prevent and address the behaviours. In certain situations, we can arrange some follow-up work regarding the needs of people in your care.
