How do I protect myself and others against COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

  • Hand washing remains the most important step in reducing the spread of infection and will protect you from a host of infections.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly for 20 seconds throughout the day, by using soap and water and remember to dry your hands thoroughly.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains
    at least 60-70% alcohol.

Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy – for everyone

  • Before, during, and after preparing food.
  • Before eating food.
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound.
  • After using the toilet.
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet.
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste.
  • After handling pet food or pet treats.
  • After touching garbage.

Remember the 5 moments of hand hygiene – for all healthcare workers

  • Before client appointment.
  • Before a procedure.
  • After a procedure or exposure to bodily fluid.
  • After client appointment.
  • After leaving the clients home.

What should I do If I think I have been exposed?

If you think you have been exposed to coronavirus:

  • Please stay home and phone Healthline on 0800 358 5453
  • Please contact HealthCare NZ on 0800 002 722 or your local brunch

Currently, MoH advise self-isolation for 14 days is for those who:

  • Have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus
  • or are a suspected or confirmed case of coronavirus
  • Have returned from overseas travel

What do I do if I feel unwell?

If you are unwell and experiencing symptoms, please stay home and phone Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or your doctor.

Please phone your doctor ahead of visiting to ensure they are able to take necessary precautions to protect other people from potential exposure.

What should I do if I have an underlying medical condition?

If you have underlying medical conditions (such as a compromised immune system, liver disease, cancer, kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes mellitus) please seek advice from your GP. As well as taking the normal precautions, please also:

  • Avoid staying with a person who is self-isolating (because they are a close contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19 or have recently traveled overseas.
  • Stay at least two metres away from people who are unwell.
  • Check the SafeTravel website https://www.safetravel.govt.nz/news/novel-coronavirus-covid-19 about COVID-19 if you plan overseas travel.

Does my support worker need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as aprons, gloves and masks while providing care?

We have been advised that there is an appropriate PPE policy being reviewed as we speak for all workforces under urgency by the Ministry of Health National Coordination Centre, and we will provide an update as soon as possible

We are following the Ministry of Health’s guidance in relation to the use of PPE and Healthcare NZ staff will continue to observe standard precautions, such as handwashing.

What if you have concerns about visitors to your home?

It is important for visitors to take appropriate steps to ensure you and our staff are kept well.

If potential visitors:

  • Have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus
  • or are a suspected or confirmed case of coronavirus
  • Have returned from overseas travel

Please ask them to reconsider visiting if required.
