Pat Turner, Support Worker, NZCare Disability – Porirua, Wellington
Support Worker Pat Turner is rapidly approaching her 10-year anniversary with NZCare Disability.
Based at NZCare Disability’s Emmerson House in Porirua, a residential service for people with intellectual disabilities, Pat’s day-to-day role involves providing support to the home’s 18 residents, and helping them to live the lives they want. Pat also drives the Emmerson House van, and takes the people she supports on regular outings and to and from appointments.
In her decade with NZCare Disability Pat has completed a number of courses and qualifications, including her Level 1, 2 and 3 Support Worker NZQA qualifications.
I think NZCare has a real view of the future and use training and development to prepare support workers like me for what might be coming next. It’s a real focus for the organisation,” Pat says.
But Pat says it’s really the people she supports that keep her coming to work each day.
“For me it’s all about putting a smile on their faces. Giving to the people we support and helping them to enjoy their everyday is very important.”
