Wheelchair Warriors Receive Extra Boost

Healthcare Rehabilitation is proud to be supporting a group of Dunedin based people who have long term physical injuries and disabilities with their health and fitness programmes.

The group is called the Wheelchair Warriors and its goal is to provide an enjoyable and successful environment for individuals to work on their rehabilitation and improve their physiological and psychological wellbeing. It is facilitated by Nick Chisholm, who sustained locked in syndrome due to a rugby accident 16 years ago.

Russell Simpson, General Manager, Healthcare Rehabilitation says “We’re thrilled to be able to support the Wheelchair Warriors through our client sponsorship programme, where they have received funding, equipment and clothing. We know that Wheelchair Warriors will help people in all aspects of their life and we see our involvement as the beginning of a long term arrangement with Nick and his team.”

Wheelchair Warriors operates out of the Sky City Fitness which has also been instrumental in supporting the group. It is also supported by six students from the Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Activity, Health and Wellness) at Otago Polytechnic. They are on placement with the Wheelchair Warriors, helping with exercise and rehabilitation programmes.

“Due to long term injuries many forget the importance of consistent exercise. Not only does the exercise itself benefit the Wheelchair Warriors, but by simply getting out of home and socializing with regular gym members has proven to be extremely beneficial,” says Nick Chisholm.

Personal training and education sessions are held up to 5 times a week over a two hour duration with members of the Wheelchair Warriors.

The Wheelchair Warrior’s team met with Healthcare Rehabilitation on Wednesday 17 May to thank them for their support at Sky City Fitness.
