Whānau Carers
One of the most meaningful things you can do in life is caring for someone close to you. At HealthCare NZ, we believe that kind of dedication deserves both recognition and support.
If you’re already helping a loved one at home, you may be able to turn that care into a fulfilling career with training, guidance, and financial support.
What does a whānau carer do?
A whānau carer is someone who provides regular support to a family member or loved one living with a disability, health condition, or injury. This support might include:
Personal care and hygiene
Preparing meals
Assisting with mobility and transport
Managing medications
This is crucial, often underappreciated work, but with HealthCare NZ many whānau carers are able to access training, financial support, and the opportunity to become a full-fledged paid support worker.

Our team will guide you through the process and provide resources to help you thrive.
Many whānau carers go on to become support workers, coordinators, or pursue further roles in healthcare.
We work with you to ensure that your training and support fits around your whānau and lifestyle.
What does it take to become a whānau carer?
You may be eligible to become a whānau carer if:
- You’re already supporting a loved one at home.
- The person you care for receives government funding (such as through ACC or the Ministry of Health).
- You’re open to completing basic training to ensure safe, high-quality care.
We’ll help you understand your options and guide you through every step, from application to onboarding.
