Our nurses. Our guture. Empowered nurses save lives.

International Nurses Day on 12 May is a chance to recognise the vital role nurses play in healthcare every day.

At HealthCare New Zealand, nursing is more than a profession – it is one of the most skilled, essential, and human roles in the health system. Nurses sit at the centre of care, providing expertise, reassurance, and connection when people need it most.

Their work is constant but never routine. Across shifts, callouts, and patient interactions, nurses are making real-time decisions – assessing needs, responding to change, and delivering care in often complex and unpredictable situations. It is highly skilled work, carried out under pressure, and grounded in care for people and their whānau.

What makes nursing unique is the balance it requires. Nurses move between clinical judgement, emotional support, and practical care – sometimes all within a single moment. They are the steady presence in uncertainty, the calm in a crisis, and the trusted support for people at some of life’s most vulnerable times.

That complexity also means nursing cannot happen in isolation. The environment around nurses directly shapes what they are able to do. When they are supported, they are better able to focus, respond, and deliver consistent, high-quality care.

This year’s International Nurses Day theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” reflects this reality. When nurses are trusted, resourced, and supported to do their mahi well, the impact is felt not only by them, but by every person they care for.

Support can take many forms – access to the right tools and resources, flexibility in how work is structured, opportunities for development, and the reassurance of a strong team behind them. While these may seem practical, they have a direct impact on the quality and continuity of care.

At HealthCare New Zealand, supporting nurses is not a single initiative – it is an ongoing commitment. It means listening to their experiences, creating pathways for growth, and continually improving the environments they work in. It also means recognising that nursing evolves, and support must evolve with it.

When nurses are enabled to do their best work, care becomes more responsive, more connected, and more sustainable. The benefits extend well beyond the clinical setting – into homes, whānau, and communities across Aotearoa.

To all our nurses throughout the country, thank you. Your skill, compassion, resilience, and manaakitanga are at the heart of healthcare in this country.

The care you provide every day makes a lasting difference in people’s lives. We are proud to stand alongside you, and proud to support your mahi – today and every day.
