HCNZ Support Worker’s swift action proves critical
Penelope (Penny), one of our incredible Community Support Workers, recently found herself in a situation that truly shows the heart of this work.
“I was on a regular shift when suddenly things changed. My client became unresponsive and fainted. I made sure she was safe, pressed the medical alarm and started CPR. Thankfully, the ambulance arrived just as she was coming back around. I stayed with her, called her son, and made sure the paramedics had everything they needed.”
Moments like these remind Penny why she gets up every day.
“I love looking after people. It gives me a boost, makes me smile knowing I can make someone else feel safe and supported. Sometimes, we’re the only person they see in their day, so it’s important we make them feel good about themselves.”
Penny has been part of our HealthCare NZ whānau for 6 years, working in Nelson before recently moving to Oamaru.
“I’ve met so many amazing people through this job — people with disabilities, people who just need someone in their corner. I’m just glad I can be there for them.”
